LebensraumHabitat
Stony sites and dry succulent-rich scrub in the Eastern Cape, often on rocky slopes and open ground. The large tuberous storage stem is naturally mostly subterranean, with only the low spiny branches appearing above ground. The species can grow with P. succulentum and is difficult to identify securely without flowers.
Full sun, an airy mineral mix and water during summer growth; cool, frost-free and dry in winter. Do not expose the entire tuber.

Nutzung, Giftigkeit und GrenzenUse, toxicity and limits

At the same time the species belongs to a family containing potent, sometimes cardioactive compounds; the historical use is therefore not an instruction for consumption.
