A rhizomatous or tuberous species reaching about 70 cm. Different varieties and habitats produce markedly different leaf and shoot forms. The receptacle bears numerous pistillate flowers; appendage shape, leaf indumentum and underground organs should be assessed together.

- LebensraumHabitat
A rock-dweller and occasional epiphyte on coral limestone, granite and other outcrops in forest, woodland, thicket and dry to moist montane forest. Humus pockets on rock may remain substantially moister than exposed succulent sites while still draining freely.
Do not treat as an extreme desert plant: keep warm and bright without constant midday sun and water more regularly while in leaf. Use an airy humus-mineral mix. Do not bury the discoid tuber deeply where the accession naturally carries it near the surface.
