03 / LEBENSRAUM UND KULTURHABITAT AND CULTIVATION

Reading the habitat

MikrohabitatMicrohabitat
Cliffs, steep slopes and narrow rock crevices from roughly 30 to 1,100 metres. Plants mainly occupy exposed, sharply drained rock sites, although aspect and ledges can provide temporary shade.
GeologieGeology
The species occupies both karstic limestone of the plateaux and igneous rock in the Haggeher Mountains. The shallow, rapidly drained rooting space appears more important than one particular rock type.
KlimaClimate
Socotra is warm throughout the year, dry and strongly monsoonal. Rainfall is irregular, while fog adds moisture at higher elevations. On exposed rock, brief moist periods alternate with rapid drying.
Klima am dokumentierten FundortClimate at the documented locality
No sufficiently precise locality is documented for this accession. No accession-specific temperature or precipitation values are therefore given; the general climatic setting of the natural range remains the basis.
Cultivation inference
A coarse, stable and predominantly mineral root zone is the logical starting point. Keep warm and very bright, water thoroughly while in leaf and allow the mix to dry afterwards; reduce water markedly during dormancy. Waterlogging and cold, wet soil do not match the natural site.

Recorded uses on Socotra

Use of leaves and pulped plant material as livestock fodder during severe drought is recorded. The bark was used in veterinary splints and bindings; the chopped inner stem was prepared as a wash for mange. Islanders also reported that termites avoid the plant.
