02 / ERKENNUNGCHARACTERS

Wuchs und Merkmale Habit and characters

A perennial or sometimes annual, decumbent to erect, often much-branched succulent herb 12–50 cm tall. The roots may be somewhat tuberous, especially in grassland forms. The often viscid succulent leaves measure 20–50 × 15–35 mm, bear orange gland dots beneath and are unpleasantly scented. Codd stresses that vegetative characters vary considerably while floral characters are relatively constant. The mauve-purple corolla is 12–20 mm long.

Reading the habitat

Mikrohabitat & Geologie Microhabitat & geology
Usually beneath trees in open woodland and among rocks in grassland, especially on dolomite. Plants may behave as annuals or perennials depending on region; tuberous roots are recorded in some grassland forms.
Klima / Biom Climate / biome
saisonal geprägter Standort seasonally structured habitat
Klima am dokumentierten FundortClimate at the documented locality
No sufficiently precise locality is documented for this accession. No accession-specific temperature or precipitation values are therefore given; the general climatic setting of the natural range remains the basis.
Cultivation inference
The rocky, seasonally dry habitat points to warmth, bright light to light semi-shade, and a mineral substrate that dries rapidly. Tuberous roots may occur but are not constant across all origins.
