02 / ERKENNUNGCHARACTERS

Wuchs und Merkmale Habit and characters

A perennial, decumbent to trailing succulent herb, freely branched at the base and about 30 cm tall. The succulent obovate to broadly obovate leaves usually measure 20–30 × 15–25 mm but may reach 50 × 40 mm in cultivation according to Codd; they are strongly veined and bear orange gland dots beneath. The 20–25 mm corolla is bluish mauve with dark purple mottling on the upper lip. The leaves are unpleasantly scented.

03 / LEBENSRAUM UND KULTURHABITAT AND CULTIVATION

Reading the habitat

Mikrohabitat & Geologie Microhabitat & geology
The species is recorded as indigenous from Ethiopia to Tanzania. It grows at 1,000–1,500 m among rocks in semi-shade, often above the forest zone. It has been cultivated and partly naturalised in southern Africa.

Klima am dokumentierten FundortClimate at the documented locality
No sufficiently precise locality is documented for this accession. No accession-specific temperature or precipitation values are therefore given; the general climatic setting of the natural range remains the basis.
Cultivation inference
Its high-elevation habitat among rocks in semi-shade points to bright filtered light, excellent drainage and some night-time cooling. Water moderately during active growth and avoid waterlogging.
